Years go by and all the kids grow up, but no one forgets Roxaboxen and when Frances visits, fifty years later, her jeweled house still gleams. A lizard is buried in Roxaboxen’s cemetery and when the cactus blooms, they put flowers on the grave. They run their own businesses, drive their own pretend cars and ride imaginary horses as fast as they can. Marian becomes mayor of Roxaboxen and Frances builds a jeweled house out of colored desert glass. Each citizen is free to build whatever type of house suits them best with the available materials. The hill across from the houses is covered with rocks and boxes and the local kids set up a town there, called Roxaboxen, with special black pebbles for money and property lines defined with stones. The plot in a nutshell: Kids build an imaginary town. Written by Alice McLerran, Illustrated by Barbara Cooney HarperCollins, 1991

Zweig's account has been the definitive biography of Marie Antoinette since its publication, inspiring Antonia Fraser and the recent film adaptation. And in his account of 'The Revolution', he describes her resolve during the failed escape to varennes, her imprisonment in the Conciergerie and her final tragic destiny under the guillotine. Zweig describes Marie Antoinette in the King's bedroom, in the enchanted and extravagant world of the Trianon, and with her children. Zweig analyzes the chemistry of a woman's soul from her intimate pleasures to her public suffering as a Queen under the weight of misfortune and history. Bringing to life one of the most complex characters in European history Stefan Zweig based his biography of Marie Antoinette, who became the Queen of France at the age of fifteen, on the correspondence between her and her mother, and her great love the Count Axel von Fersen. |
